Old classics, blockbusters take over Tamil Nadu theatres

Following the strike initiated by the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council along with other film associations from neighbouring states against digital service providers like QUBE and UFO, there have been no new releases this week in Tamil and Telugu. Reportedly, the Malayalam and Kannada industries seem to have sorted out issues and are not part of the strike. Though 11 Tamil films were released last Friday and 9 films the previous weekend, they all sank without a trace.

In a quick damage control measure, several theatre owners have opted to re-release recent and old blockbusters as, after all, audiences would not mind watching a hit film for the second time. This includes STR - Trisha’s Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, Siddharth- Andrea’s Aval, Vikram Vedha, old MGR classic Adimai Penn, Ajith’s Vedalam, Vijay’s Mersal, Meesaiya Murukku and Sakka Podu Podu Raja. Surprisingly, the list also comprises Hollywood hits like Titanic and 3D animated fantasy adventure Coco.
