I'd be a nobody without Simbu: Santhanam

Santhanam was once a busy comedian who was working on multiple projects at once, but now — after his transformation into a hero — he’s more comfortable doing a film a year. The actor has become conscious about his looks and is constantly working on it. “Hero-va aana idhellam venume. Earlier, I didn’t have to worry about these things, but of late, expectations have changed,” he smiles.

Awaiting the release of Sakka Podu Podu Raja this week, which also marks the music composing debut of Simbu, Santhanam says that despite stiff opposition, he’s continued to play lead roles in films like Inimey Ippadithaan and Dhilukku Dhuddu. “I wasn’t welcomed when I took the decision to shoulder a film on my own,” he says, refusing to pick names.

Talking about Sakka Podu Podu Raja, which has VTV Ganesh, Robo Shankar, Mayilsamy, Powerstar Srinivasan and Vivekh in supporting roles, Santhanam says the film will get the audience laughing out loud throughout. “Though there are as many as five comedians, everyone gets considerable screen space,” he tells us.

How does he think his comedy tracks work on screen these days? “Edho poitruku,” he says, modestly, and quickly adds, “I spend a lot of time with my team and bounce off ideas. These people know me for a long time (from my Lollu Sabha days), and are aware of my strengths and weaknesses. The interesting aspect is that, most of the punch dialogues I deliver are spontaneous. Moreover, when a producer trusts me and invests money, I’ve to do justice, right?”

Santhanam is careful about his choice of films, and believes that only the story and his characterisation truly matter. “Just because I am doing films, it doesn’t mean I’ll do something I am not comfortable with. I know my limits. I was fed up playing comedy roles, and wanted to evolve. Evlo naal dhaan hero friend-a vey irupen!”

The transition has been a lot of hard work, he admits. “I try not to overact. I just do the best I can to enhance the story. I ensure I don’t repeat myself. Even as a comedian, I never did.” He explains, “When I did comedy tracks, they existed as separate portions, but now I choose scripts that are more inclusive of humour. I’ve also evolved as an artiste and a person. Back during the day, I would make digs at everything and laugh. But now, I’m a bit more serious, you could say,” he laughs.

He says he owes everything to Simbu. “He’s my godfather. If he hadn’t given me a chance in Manmadhan, I’d be nowhere. It was VTV Ganesh’s suggestion to rope in STR as the composer of this film, and it was nice of him to oblige. He barely took a week to compose all the five songs we needed.”

Santhanam, who has Server Sundaram, Oodi Oodi Uzhaikanum, an untitled project with Rajesh, and Mannavan Vanthanadi in the pipeline, is aware of the responsibility of being an actor. “We are constantly held responsible for what we say. So, I have decided to keep my content clean. A lot of kids enjoy my films, and watch them again and again.” Of his upcoming films, he’s particularly excited about the one directed by Selvaraghavan. “He’s a dedicated filmmaker who’s always done intense scripts. Not many know how funny he is. Mannavan Vanthanadi will be a full-on Selvaraghavan outing intermingled with my approach towards acting. It was a challenge for me because I had to remember to slow down when acting for this film.”

The topic shifts to the acceptance TV personalities have had in Tamil cinema. “When I took the plunge, it was difficult. People looked down upon my background,” he recalls.

Sakka Podu Podu Raja is releasing alongside Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikkaran on December 22, but Santhanam doesn’t think Siva is competition. “Maybe the competition is between our films, which is healthy. Ego irundha dhaan thappu. Adhu illa,” he clarifies.

He hopes to turn director sometime. “Definitely soon!” he says. “I am slowly getting familiar with all the departments of filmmaking.” Santhanam may be well-known for his humour, but he’s also philosophical in speech. “I am very spiritual too,” he says. “I’ve a different image as an actor, but I am not the same in my life. I was able to do many things because I stepped out of my comfort zone. That’s how you develop skills,” he says. Turning hero is, of course, the furthest he’s stepped out of his comfort zone.

I DISCUSS EVERYTHING RELATED TO MY CAREER WITH SIMBU

After taking a risky decision to stop being a comedian and act only as a hero, Santhanam is now looking forward to Sakka Podu Podu Raja, in which he plays a pucca commercial hero. The film has created some buzz, thanks to the fact that actor Simbu is making his debut as a composer. Chennai Times spoke to Santhanam on the controversy around Simbu, his equation with the actor, his evolution into a leading man and the so-called competition with Sivakarthikeyan. Excerpts:

Why did you bring in Simbu to compose the music for the film?

We had initially approached Harris Jayaraj, but since he was busy at that time, he couldn’t take it up. That is when VTV Ganesh suggested that it would be great if Simbu composed the music for the film. When we spoke to Simbu, he said that he needed time to think about it. About a week later, he called up to say that he will do the film because the script was commercial. This was during last December, and I was shooting for Selvaraghavan’s Mannavan Vandhaanadi at the time. I was overjoyed.

Currently, there is a controversy around how Simbu works. How was your experience?

When has there been no controversy around Simbu? As far as our film was concerned, he took just a week to compose the five songs we needed. In fact, he completely took charge of the music, and worked hard to ensure that both the songs and the re-recording came out good.

You have been a staunch supporter of Simbu, and even said recently that whatever others think of him, you consider him as your godfather. Can you elaborate on your relationship with him?

Before he began Manmadhan, Simbu called me on his own and praised the work I was doing on Lollu Sabha and said that he liked it very much. I mentioned to him that I’d actually worked alongside him in Kadhal Azhivathillai, as a junior artiste. That was quite some news to him, but he said that he would write a role just for me in Manmadhan. That’s how I played the comedian in the Mottai Madhan (one of the characters Simbu played) portions of the film. Even though I came for just two reels, and only in the second half, those scenes worked well with the audience and that is how my film career actually took off. I admire how he is multi-talented — he acts, he makes music, he directs… This is why, when it comes to my cinema life, I consider him as my godfather. I discuss everything related to my career with him, including my scripts.

After Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham, he told me to do another film to see how I fare as a hero and then take a call on whether I wanted to continue doing comedian roles or act only in lead roles. After seeing Inimey Ippadithaan, he said that I managed to be convincing in not just the comedy scenes, but also in the two romantic tracks and the final emotional scene. And when Dhilukku Dhuddu came my way, he urged me to take it up saying that only I would be able to do that film because only I can make fun of ghosts

When my films are making money, isn’t it proof that people have accepted me as a hero?’

You have now decided not to be a comedian in movies and act only as the lead. How do you see this evolution from comedian to hero? I had to transform myself for this... Not just learning dance and stunts, I even had to modify my body language. I watched a lot of movies to observe heroes, though I was pretty sure I did not want to copy the heroes in our industry. Perhaps if I had acted as a hero right at the start of my career, before doing 150 films as a comedian over the past two decades, it might have been easier to do this. But I kept practising and now, I myself can see the transformation I have undergone, and can observe the difference between the Santhanam of Oru Kal Oru Kannadi and the Santhanam of today. This feels new to me and even makes me admire myself. If I had gone on the same route, I’d have gotten bored and would have faded out. This is a refreshing change and though it demands that I strain myself, it keeps my life interesting.

But, have your transformed to a state where you can be the hero without banking on comedy?

I think I can. In fact, in Selva’s film, you will see a different Santhanam. There is some comedy, but it will not be the Santhanam kind of comedy. He is someone who will not let you go easily and will make you work until you deliver what he has in mind. He is making me perform the way he has envisioned this character. It is difficult work, but when I see the performance on the monitor, it feels worth the effort I’m putting in to play this role. We have finished most of the shoot, and only 20% work is left.

Do you think people have accepted you as a hero, given that it is hard to break an image in this industry?

I’d say yes. There weren’t many people who commented that I should stick to just comedy after Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham. And they accepted me romancing two heroines in Inimey Ippadithaan. Both these films also earned money at the box-office, and Dhilluku Dhuddu did even bigger business than these two. When my films are making money, isn’t it proof that people have accepted me as a hero?

Your film is coming out on the same day when a film of Sivakarthikeyan, who is considered your competitor, is releasing. Don’t you think it’s risky because people will be comparing the two of you?

We chose this date because it’s a Christmas holiday weekend, and the film is a perfect film for such a time. It is a jolly, commercial film. Today, there is so much stress and frustration for our people and the only way to forget these are by either going to a temple or to an entertainment avenue, like a movie theatre. I can assure that this film will be a stressbuster for them. From Vivekh sir, VTV Ganesh, Robo Shankar and Power Star (Srinivasan) to myself, the film has a good team of entertainers. Also, Sivakarthikeyan’s film and this one are quite different when it comes to genre and I think a holiday weekend can accommodate two big films. People who like him will go to see his film, while my audience will come and watch my film. And even if people are making comparisons, it can only lead to a healthy competition between us. So, let’s not worry about that.

Sakka Podu Podu Raja - Audio Launch Function

I feel special to have written for Simbu’s debut as a composer

After getting noticed for the opening song, Boys Are Back in Chennai 600028: II Innings, lyricist Karunakaran is now writing songs in a handful of films. His new release is the romantic song, Siru Siru Siru Manasu, from the Santhanam starrer Sakka Podu Podu Raja, which has music by Simbu. “I have already worked with Simbu in his directorial debut Vallavan, for the song Kadhal Vandhale. He was the one who introduced me. So, I feel special to have written for his debut as a composer,” begins Karunakaran, who likens the experience of writing for Simbu to working with a brother, a friend and a teacher.

He is straight forward. Many composers will hesitate when asking the lyricist to change a line, but like a teacher, he will say it point-blank if he does not like a line and compel you to change it. If he likes a line, he will shower praise instantly like a friend, and like a brother, he will be supportive and encourage you to take time to come up with a good line,” he elaborates.

Simbu is my Godfather - Santhanam

On Simbu whom he considers as a Godfather, Sandy says, “We share a great rapport and he is the one who introduced me in a main role in Tamil cinema. I am really blessed and proud to bring him on board for the first time to compose music for SPPR. Contrary to what people talk about STR, he gave us great songs and did re-recording in a short time. I am thankful to him.”

Would you act in a supporting role if Simbu calls you? “Why not? Having seen my film and scored a mass intro song for me in SPPR, STR pretty well knows what kind of a role should be offered to me.”  When the actor said he shares a good relationship with producer VTV Ganesh as well, it was but natural to ask if he had come down on his remunerations. “Why would I do a film for free or less salary? I have worked really hard for several months for the film and I take only what I deserve.”

I am not answerable to anyone after AAA’s release: Simbu

...says Simbu wronging the allegations made against him by producer Michael.
Simbu is once again in the news for wrong reasons. His former film producer Michael Rayappan claims that Simbu did not turn up for the shooting of his last film Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan and hence he has incurred huge losses to the tune of Rs 2 crores. He approached TFPC (Tamil Nadu Film Producer’s Council) with a complaint to resolve issue. When DC contacted STR, he has his own version to say. “I cannot be answerable to a film which is already released. Let the Nadigar Sangam get my money owed by Michael Rayappan which amounts to about `3.5 crores for which I have given a complaint much before AAA’s release.”

According to Michael Rayappan it was Simbu who voluntarily called and gave his call sheets. “When Miruthan got completed, Simbu had called and said that he is available for my next film. He promised that he would come for shooting properly and that he has realised the importance of time and money. He said he would give complete support. Despite many people warning me not to work with him — because he was convincing I could not back out. But despite giving dates from January, he did not turn up twice. The heroine was brought to Chennai with her assistants and her dates were also wasted. He did not turn up several times and did not allow us to take the film as per the script. As a result, the movie was a flop and eventually pushed me into debts,” Michael says.

He also accused Simbu that the actor is least bothered about anyone so long as he gets his money. “To get money, he would go to any extent giving out false promises. The 2 crore rupees were given to him in front of his parents only.”

An unperturbed person that he was, Simbu said, “If I had taken an advance for a film and if a problem arises while it’s on floors, I am answerable for that. Why would I respond to anyone’s claim when the movie has been already released? If they had complained while we were shooting AAA, there’s some meaning. That being the case, it’s not fair for the Producers Council to ask me about it. Although, I haven’t received any official letter from them. I have given up my salary that was due to me and only then, the movie got released.”

The VTV star also adds, “In fact, I have given a complaint to Nadigar Sangam to get Rs 3.5 crores from producer Michael Rayappan which he owes me much ahead of Anbanavan… release. Let them put the Red Card — I know how to handle it.”

When we contacted TFPC, a close source confirms that they have asked explanation from STR after they received a written complaint from Michael.

“There’s nothing called the ‘Red Card’ or anything. We want to resolve the issue as early as possible. STR has to face the repercussions. Other producers would think twice before signing him and those who have signed may also back out,” says the source indicating the actor’s upcoming film with Mani Ratnam. Another source from SIAA also confirmed that there was a complaint from STR on Michael to recover the outstanding payment to him.
