TR's yesteryear film sets recreated for Simbu

Looks like the set of Simbu's upcoming film with Adhik Ravichandran, is inspired from his father T Rajhendherr's (TR) old blockbuster songs. We hear that director Adhik has planned to recreate the 80's feel for a song in Simbu's Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (AAA), by recreating some of the sets that featured in TR's old hit songs. Says Aadhik, “ A lot of people have misunderstood our intention thinking that we are planning to remix TR's songs. That's not true. We have chosen eight blockbuster songs from TR sir's hit films, and have decided to recreate sets similar to it, for one of the songs in AAA. Yuvan has already composed the song, and it is a foot-tapping number. The set will be erected in EVP in Chennai, we will be shooting the song next week.“

Interesting combo on the cards!

Venkat Prabhu, who is currently busy with the production of Chennai 600028 II: Second Innings has announced that he would be teaming up with STR soon for a film. According to reports, the director is planning to remake Billa with the Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada actor!

However, when contacted, a source close to the director said, “Right now, we haven’t started working on the project. He has a story idea that needs to be tuned into a proper script. Venkat Prabhu’s concentration solely lies on the sequel to Chennai 600028.” Considering Venkat and STR’s rapport, if the film materialises, it would be a fun entertainer. Sources also added that the director might start working on the film with STR sometime next year. We hear that this project might not be a continuation to Vishnuvardhan’s Billa with Ajith, though. Venkat Prabhu and the Chennai 600028 team are heading towards the final schedule, which will go on for 10 days. Apart from the talkie portions, the team will fly abroad to shoot a promotional song. “We haven’t finalised the location as of now, and will be announcing it soon,” the source concluded.

The actor, who was embroiled in the Beep song controversy, was all praise for his fellow co-star STR. Y Gee Mahendra, who was last seen in Kanithan, has been roped in to play an important role in director Adhik Ravichandran’s Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangathavan. “For the past three years, I’ve been doing only character roles. With this role (Current Murugan), I am back to my forte, which is comedy. I play Shriya Saran’s father and it’s a fun-filled role. I’ve completed my portions and the majority of my scenes are with STR and VTV Ganesh,” says the actor when queried about his role in the movie. The actor, who was embroiled in the Beep song controversy, was all praise for his fellow co-star STR. “I found him to be a very talented person who knows a lot about cinema. And I heard from my director that STR was the one who insisted that I play the role. He’s got a high scope for performance in this film.

Simbu inspired me to get into movies: Mahat

After starring in a series of Telugu projects, Mahat Raghavendra will finally be seen in two of this year's most-talked-about projects — the sequel to Chennai 28 and Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (AAA). "I am having a gala time shooting for AAA. Simbu and I are childhood friends. In fact, I got into movies because of him. He was the first one to introduce me to the screen. I had a few scenes as his friend in Vallavan. I am glad that I am getting to work with him once again now. In fact, the first day of shoot began with just me and him. Shriya joined a little later, followed by VTV Ganesh. It is a chilled-out atmosphere on the set," shares an excited Mahat.
Talking about Simbu, he says, "There is talk in the industry that Simbu is not punctual. But we work from 7am to 10pm. There are also rumours that people are not getting along on the set. It is utterly false. Everything has been going smooth. We have finished five days of shoot and we will be heading to Dindigul for the first schedule," states Mahat.

The Jilla actor is also part of the Chennai 28 sequel. Talking about the film, he says, "I am glad I got to do a role in this film. It is a total laugh riot. Interestingly, I had worked with most of the guys in Mankatha, so it felt like a reunion of sorts for most of us. Shiva has become very close to me." His project with Bharathiraja's son, Manoj, is also set to take off soon. "I play a lead in this film along with Premgi. The music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. This one will also be a city-based story where I play a youngster," he signs off.

I owe Simbu everything: Santhanam

You’ve also now jumped into the horror genre with Dhillukku Dhuddu.
It is a horror-coated romantic-comedy, where the horror isn’t just included as an after-thought. Like each of my earlier films as hero, this will also be a commercial entertainer.

Television opened the doors into cinema for actors like you and Sivakarthikeyan. Why aren’t we really seeing such shows any more?
I was lucky to have been spotted by Simbu, who cast me in Manmadhan. He took a leaf out of Balachander’s book, when he presented me with an opportunity and saw my talent taking wing. As for television, I think channels should have brought in more comedy shows to interest the youth.

You seem to be rather close to Simbu, and have appeared in cameos in his films.
It’s just a small way of reciprocating what he has done for me. I owe him everything, and the best way to thank him is to let my work do the talking.

Things will be sorted out with Simbu : GVM

Gautham Vasudev Menon is one filmmaker whose body of work reflects his passion and pursuit of perfection. He redefined romance in Tamil cinema, and always portrays female characters with dignity. Known for stylish filmmaking, his upcoming big budget flick Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada, in which he collaborates with Simbu for the second time along with Manjima Mohan debuting as the female lead, is no different. The music album of AYM composed by AR Rahman, which was launched earlier, opened to outstanding response with the sensational single Thalli Pogadhey going viral overnight. But now, the film is in the news for a different reason.

AYM is mired in controversy for the reported stand-off between Gautham and STR with respect to the shoot of the Thalli... number which seems to be still pending. When DC caught up with Menon about the issue, he says ‘all is well’ and is confident of sorting it out soon. He also spills the beans about his Dhanush movie Ennai Nokki Paayum Thotta and his ambitious magnum opus — a multi starrer with actors from multiple southern languages.

Excerpts of our conversation with Gautam: We hear that though AYM (Sahasam Swasaga Sagipo in Telugu with Naga Chaitanya) starts with a love segment, and the story takes a different turn in the latter session? “I’ve tried a unique connect between two young people in AYM. Once the connect is established, the story flows automatically into a different kind of trouble for the two of them and soon love is put on the back burner. There are more important and dangerous issues to handle. Here, my treatment of romance is slightly altered. The movie enters into a violent space in the second half,” Gautham reveals.

On choosing Manjima Mohan, he says, “She is spunky within that soft demeanour of hers and we liked that for the character she plays in the film. It’s exactly the same image on and off-screen. She speaks both the languages easily and is a pleasure to work with.”

Coming to the issue with Simbu that is making the rounds, Gautham puts the record straight and says that things will be cleared soon. “Simbu is one of the finest actors in Tamil cinema. In fact, I was very particular that he be cast as the protagonist. He has delivered an extraordinary performance in Achcham... which will elevate him to a different level. Nothing went wrong between us. This is not an issue that other producers don’t face. The Telugu version was done to help fund AYM. The Dhanush film was also kick-started, as it had a committed date. We were supposed to finish AYM in February... A lot of the payment made to Simbu and the technicians was from my salary advance for that film; but it is only half. We are hoping to settle the money and get him to finish work,” muses Gautham. Reportedly, STR was not happy to join the Turkey schedule for the shoot of the number Thalli Pogadhey, since Gautham clubbed it with the shooting of Dhanush’s Ennai Nokki Paayum Thotta. Shedding light on this, he explains, “I didn’t think he would have a problem.

Friends normally don’t have a problem. That was my point of view.” Ever since ENPT, which features Dhanush and Megha Akash, was announced, it has been creating a lot of buzz. Megha is said to essay the role of a film personality, who Dhanush falls in love with — and then gets into a life-threatening situation, while saving her from a predicament. Apparently, with proper planning, the Yennai Arindhaal director has completed a major part of the film in a short time. Gautham is also pulling off a coup by bringing four top actors from the four south languages for his multilingual film titled Ondraaga (Together). The movie will feature Prithviraj from Malayalam, Puneeth Rajkumar from Kannada and Sai Dharam Tej from the Telugu industry — but he is yet to finalise the star from Tamil.

Anushka and Tamannaah have also been roped in as heroines. “It has always been a dream to work with more than one hero in a film. These stars are actors too, they understood the scope and were keen. Production is planned across the US — it will be a 70-day shoot,” Gautham concludes.

Shriya Saran to pair opposite Simbu in AAA

The latest we hear on Simbu's film with director Ravichandran, Adhik AAA (Anbanavan Asarathavan Adangadhavan) is that Shriya Saran, who was last seen in a cameo in Thozha, is all set to make her comeback in Kollywood as the female lead in this film.

While we contacted director Adhik, he was unwilling to confirm the news, saying it is too early to talk about it. However, we reached out to Shriya Saran, asking if she had signed on this film, and the actress confirmed it, saying, “Yes, that's true.“ She added that she's happy to be a part of AAA, which she called a “sweet film“. The shoot of the film is set to happen in a month's time, and major portions of it will be shot in Mysore and Kerala. The team is planning to reveal Simbu's three looks soon. Yuvan has already composed two songs for the film.

Gautham is the ideal teacher for any actor: Manjima Mohan

Manjima Mohan, who is being launched by Gautham Vasudev Menon in his upcoming bilingual film Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (AYM), starring STR in the lead, couldn’t have asked for a better debut. With acclaimed cinematographer Vipin Mohan being her father, she is no stranger to films. Movies were always on her mind, even as a child artiste. She says, “I started my acting career knowing nothing. Director Vineeth Srinivasan had sent Gautham sir the trailer of Oru Vadakkan Selfie. When he called me up afterwards, I was speechless. I auditioned for the role and was eventually selected.”

The doe-eyed beauty couldn’t stop talking about the ace director. “Gautham sir helped me a lot. In fact, I have always wanted to work with him. Initially, I was nervous, but he made me feel comfortable. He’s fun to be with, gives space to actors and pushes them to do better. One of the best things about him is that he’s calm and patient. I’ve never seen him yell at anybody. I’d say he’s an ideal teacher for any actor. I count myself lucky because I know this opportunity is something quite big, which everyone would ask for. Given a chance, I’d love to work with him once again,” she says.

She was all praise for the cast, which includes Simbu. “He’s a natural performer and working with him has been a great experience. He taught me how to improvise on the scenes. When we started shooting, we never got to talk. All we shared was a formal relationship. Now, we both actually chill together! He is an amazing human being.” Interestingly, Manjima says she chooses her project based on the filmmakers. “To me, they are important more than the lead actors,” she chuckles.

Like most of Gautham’s films, AYM is rooted in love, adds Manjima, but quickly adds — “This film will be more than the usual Gautham Menon outing. There’s action, romance, and drama.” Quiz her about her character in the film, and she answers, “I play a girl-next-door. But there’s something special about her — because the way she talks and behaves, makes guys easily fall for her. It’s completely opposite to what I played in Oru Vadakkan Selfie.”

What’s next, we ask? “I am open to all industries —Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam. I am playing the female lead in director SR Prabhakaran’s next film featuring Vikram Prabhu. I liked the story and chose to be a part of the film after listening to the first half itself! Though I have been getting more offers, I am waiting for AYM to be released because I want to know how the audience receives me before deciding my next venture,” she concludes.

STR has bulked up to 95 kilos for AAA!

We had reported earlier that Adhik Ravichandran of Trisha Illana Nayanthara fame, is directing Simbu’s Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (AAA). Now, the latest information DC has, is that the music album will have nine songs. Adhik tells us, “The theme song will be the highlight of the film, which has been sung by Simbu himself. It will be on the lines of Ajith’s opening song in Mankatha. Since it’s the fifth time that both Yuvan Shankar Raja and Simbu are coming together, we’re keen in offering something special to the audience. A few more surprises are in store too!”

He adds that the team will begin the first leg of shooting in a couple of weeks in and around Mysore and Kerala. “Simbu was extremely happy with the script and what I like about him is the kind of dedication he shows in whatever he does. He has grown a beard, mustache and additionally a goatee for the film. Not just this, he has put on a lot of weight (currently 95 kilos), as the role demanded it. He never asked me any question as to why I wanted him to do so,” Adhik says.

What’s next? “As soon as I wrap up this project, I’ll be collaborating with GV Prakash again. We decided to team up soon after we finished Trisha... however, this film with Simbu happened meanwhile.” On why he wants to work with GV again — “He is one of those people who I can get along well with,” he concludes.
