Silambarasan TR, who is presently shooting for Maanaadu and is awaiting the release of Eeswaran, will soon star in a sort-of sequel to his 2012 film, Podaa Podi. Titled Podaa Podi 2, the original’s producer Padam Kumar is bankrolling this project, too. The producer reveals that he will be launching newcomer Ritika Paul, who will play the heroine opposite STR. “She is supposed to debut in one of our films in Hindi in April 2021, but this will be her first project in Tamil. She has been training for more than a year,” Padam Kumar adds.
Quiz him if Vignesh Shivan, who made his debut with Podaa Podi, will be directing this film as well, and he says he isn’t ready to reveal the director of this film yet. “All I can say for now is that the film will be directed by a filmmaker who I have introduced in the past,” he states. The music director is also yet to be finalised. “Dharan gave superb music in Podaa Podi. I’m trying to retain the original team as much as possible.”
He says, “We have been trying to crack a script for Podaa Podi 2 for the past one-and-a-half years, and we got a satisfactory script only recently. Like the original, this one will also be a musical film... fun, contemporary and shot in live locations.” He informs that this might not be a continuation of the first film, but will have “one back story that connects that film to this one.” He adds, “Otherwise, this is going to be a completely fresh script. And like the previous film, which was set entirely in London, this one will also be shot abroad.” Padam Kumar says the movie will most likely go on floors in Summer 2021. “Given that the film is going to be shot abroad, I don’t think we can afford to travel before June or July 2021 as some consulates are yet to reopen. The idea is to start rolling in May-June.”
