Obeli N Krishna, the director behind films ike Sillunu Oru Kadhal and Nedunchalai, is excited that his latest film, his latest release, Pathu Thala, which stars Silambarasan TR, is entertaining viewers. “When Gnanavel (Raja) sir offered me this project and informed me that STR would be part of it, all I wanted to do was not break that trust,” he says, adding, “I hope I have done justice to it.
The scale of the film became even bigger when AR Rahman came on board as the music director. “We have been friends for a long time. The songs are already chartbusters, and people are loving the background score,” says Krishna.
While Pathu Thala is a remake of the Kannada film Mufti, Krishna explains that he rewrote the script and made several changes to the original. “We decided to write something that will be new for even viewers who have watched the original,” he says. The production of the film began in 2019 and took almost three years to complete. The pandemic was one reason for the delay, but Simbu’s physical transformation was another. Krishna shares that they had to scrap 15 days of footage with the actor as he looked completely different in another schedule. “It was quite a challenging journey in multiple ways. We have to respect the audience, and if there is a change in the look of the protagonist as the film progresses, it might look bad,” he explains. Krishna praises Gautham Karthik and Priya Bhavani Shankar, the film’s other leads, for their performances. “Gautham has different shades, and I believe that directors are yet to explore his talent to the fullest. Priya is a director’s artiste,” he says. The director reveals that he has several exciting projects in the pipeline, including a sci-fi period film and another based on the air force. “I’m also working on a beautiful love story that is set in the 1970s,” he adds before signing off.
